Phantasy Star IV is often cited as one of the greatest RPGs of its generation. Telling the tale of the battle between Dark Force and a group of brave adventurers led by Chaz Ashley, Phantasy Star IV totally changed how people would see mainstream RPG games and provided a platform for all RPGs that came after it. Set across planets in the Algol Solar System, the game features a huge variety of enemies, weapons, and towns to explore.

The combat is turn based, with actions dictated by statistics and order. There are a huge number of skills and spells available to learn, and sometimes two different ones used by seperate party members can form a single powerful effect. Phantasy Star IV also utilised a system of Macros that could be pre-programmed and used as a set list of team moves.

The main story is deep and contains tragedy, humour, loyalty and character development. Presented in Manga panels, the story graphics were quite advanced and well drawn for the era.

  • In a widely known glitch, any player determined enough to reach level 99 will be frustrated to find that doing so actually greatly decreases your stats.
  • Rika seems to be very similar in appearence and ability to Nei from Phantasy Star II, and was probably created in homage to the tragic heroine.
